Starting to settle down a bit here in Seattle. After a find a new place and moving in things will really start settling down. The job is not ideal but has been a huge step up from unemployed. I have new found respect for all grocery store employees I encounter in the future. It's not an easy job (in some ways at least). I think in a lot of ways this was the perfect job for me at this time. Freed my mind from all the anxiety and shame of unemployment and continues to free my mind to think about the future. Sounds like there's a chance I may even be promoted soon.
Being back in Seattle has been good as well. Trying to pick up the pieces of the social life I had. Again a huge improvement from Boise where I essentially had no friends (but a wonderful dog). Also still feel a little on the outside sometimes. Not quite entirely comfortable yet.
I picked blueberries last Friday. Rode my bike from my house all the way across the I-90 bridge which was something I had been wanting to do for some time. Damn near collapsed when I got home. My lungs were still willing but my legs were not. Came home with about 5-6 pounds of berries (for 1.25$ a pound!) which are almost gone thanks to a combination of pie, milkshakes, and cereal. Will probably do it again soon (though I might drive next time).
Also having the urge to garden but no outlet for it. Going to apply for a p-patch for next summer. |

| best bread ever |
[Mar. 24th, 2009|08:37 pm] |
My dad and I decided to modify our usual tomato rosemary bread and had fucking fantastic results. We started with the same old tomato base but put in some fresh green pepper and tomato but no rosemary. Then instead of putting salt on top we put asiago cheese. We also forgot about it and let it rise twice as long as it was supposed to. But I think that just made up for our house being colder than the 75 degrees it's supposed to rise at. Either way it looked like the bread you see in a magazine. Don't believe me? Take a look for yourself...

And it tasted every bit as good as it looks :) |

| igloo |
[Dec. 23rd, 2008|02:00 am] |
Ari and I decided to fulfill one of our childhood dreams today.
Ari started in his PJ's by raking a pile of snow together. After about 2 hours he had completed the first layer. At that point I joined the effort. The first step was packing snow into a green plastic recycling bin to create "bricks". The following image is the second layer in progress, you can see the "bricks".

Once we had a ring of "bricks" the second step was to pile snow into the middle and pack it down with our feet. Here's the completed second layer.

We repeated steps 1 and 2 until we had created 4 layers, then we simply piled some snow on top to finish off the solid dome.

Once the solid dome was completed the third step was hollowing it out. Here's Ari just beginning to dig out the inside starting from what would become the entrance.

And me hard at work a little while later.

Once the interior was large enough to crawl inside it became a lot easier as we were able to use the recycling bin to haul away the excess snow without having to crawl out all the time.

April and Leonardo inside the completed igloo. Once finished the igloo was about 6 feet tall 9 feet in diameter and seated three comfortably inside. The entrance was a bit tight being only about 2x2 feet.

And of course the fourth and final step.

Today was so unbelievably awesome! Walked home at 2:30 am tonight after a truly unforgettable day. It was so eerily bright. Between the reflectivity of the snow and the clouds it was as if it were dusk or dawn. Combined with one the most epic snowfalls I have seen in my life and it was surreal. I kinda wish stuff like this would happen more often but then again it might not be quite as incredible when it did. All in all pure awesome. |

ugh. So it all started when I got to the airport in milwaukee. My flight was supposed to leave milwaukee at 3 pm and get into chicago around 3:30. My flight from chicago to seattle was at 5:20. When I got to the gate in milwaukee it was going to be delayed a half hour. I thought no big deal just means less layover in chicago. Then they announced it would be delayed until 4:30 and people with connections in chicago earlier than 5:30 should come up to the desk. I did and was given a boarding pass for a later flight from chicago to seattle but the guy was optimistic about me making my connection.
Then all of a sudden at 4 pm we boarded the plane. So i thought i was going to make it no problem. Well they de iced the plane (it was 39 and raining...) and then we got in line to take off. 20 or so minutes later they say we have waited too long since being de-iced and have to go back and do it again. So we go all the way back to the gate and get de-iced again. Then we sit in line again and finally take off. We have to circle chicago for for a while before landing as well. When we land is 5:50. I check the the status of my flight... it's in the air.
I go to the gate for the later flight. It's supposed to leave at 8 pm. 2 hours isn't too bad of a layover. I wander around a while and talk on the phone. I get back and the plane is having technical difficulties and is delayed a half hour. Then they come and say that we are switching planes and gates. I walk to the new gate and now it says we're leaving at 9 pm. 9 pm comes and goes... They say we're leaving at 9:30 pm. Finally at 9:30 we board the plane and leave shortly there after. I got into seattle about 12:15 am local time. Almost 5 hours later than I was supposed to and completely screwing my plans to take the bus home. Fortunately James gave me a ride for which i owe him my first born child and possibly a pie.
The thing that really pisses me off about it all is that they keep giving you false hope. If they just came out and said "ya you're fucked sorry it's probably going to be another hour and a half" that'd be preferable. But no it's "just a half hour delay" "just another half hour delay" "about to take off just have to de-ice and taxi". I think giving optimistic estimations to weary travelers is a bad idea. Give pessimistic estimations that way when it takes 90 minutes instead of 2 hours people will be relieved instead of frustrated. |
